Smoke-free Beaches and Piers Campaign Press Conference

April 27, 2004 at Newport Beach

After the Hold On To Your Butt Beach Clean up on April 17, 2004 at Newport Beach Pier in which 172 people showed up in the pouring rain and approximately 13,000 cigarette butts were collected, students from Newport Harbor High School called the press conference to voice their opinion about the smoke-free beaches issue.

The students filled up two empty long tubes with the cigarette butts during the press conference. Afterwards, they went to the Newport Beach city council meeting where many of the students spoke in favor of a ban of smoking on the beach.

The city of Newport Beach is now considering the ordinance and called for a study session of the smoke-free beaches issue.
